Gerry Rocan is a Level 2 Soccer Coach who has been coaching for 10 years.
Gerry has devoted an incredible amount of time to soccer, particularly in the last 5 months. When his Westman Fury tryouts began in spring, he quickly realized that he was faced with making many cuts to achieve a manageable number of players for the team. Rather than turn athletes away, he committed to keeping all of the athletes, forming and coaching two teams.
Gerry also took on the directorship of the Brandon Soccer Association, a volunteer position, which added meetings, countless phone calls, and organizational concerns to an already busy schedule.
While Gerry has spent many years coaching house league teams and developing athletes at the grassroots level, he has now spent two years working with the Westman Fury, a competitive team based in Brandon. This summer, the Westman Fury held its own against teams that have traditionally been very strong. As a result, they qualified to represent the Westman region at the Power Smart Manitoba Summer Games in Carman in the U13 soccer competition despite only being a U12 team.
Gerry is the picture of encouragement with his athletes. He makes a point of promoting team play and seems to have a knack for slotting athletes into positions where they thrive. In coaching house league games, Gerry adheres to a policy of "equal playing time". This has drawn admiration from parents and players alike and has frequently left families requesting that players be placed on Gerry's teams.
For being the October “Coach of the Month”, Gerry will receive a Coaching Manitoba clipboard and t-shirt, Global Sports merchandise and a gift package courtesy of Robin’s Donuts.
