Sport Manitoba's New Direction for Coaching in the Province

With a new year is a new direction for the delivery of coaching programs and services in the province.

As a Sport Manitoba Business Plan initiative, a Coaching Futures Group was established in 2005 by Sport Manitoba and Coaching Manitoba to review the recommendations of the National Coaching Group on the restructuring of coaching delivery in Canada, the impact it would have on sport delivery in Manitoba and make recommendations toward the implementation of a Provincial/Territorial Sport Leadership Education Council in Manitoba.

The Coaching Futures Group recommended, and Sport Manitoba's Board of Directors subsequently approved, the development of a new one-stop shop for Manitoba's coaches of all levels. The new Coaching Manitoba Unit now under the direct administration of Sport Manitoba was established to ensure that all possible synergies, advantages and efficiencies are realized by providing an all-encompassing coaching delivery system.

Under the new structure, Greg Guenther was selected as the Director of Sport Manitoba's Coaching Manitoba Unit. Greg previously was the High Performance Manager at Sport Manitoba and brings an extensive sport background to his new portfolio that includes management of Manitoba's High Performance Coach Employment program, and stewardship of the Long Term Athlete Development program. Previous positions in the sport community have provided Greg with multi-sport Games experience and leadership roles with the Team Canada Volleyball Centre and the Manitoba Volleyball Association.
